Keep Summer Moving Madness on Track with These Tips

Keep Summer Moving Madness on Track with These Tips

Summer is in full swing and with the sunshine and break from school and activities, comes the perfect window of time for families to make the move to a new home!

Relocating often meanings managing a lot of moving pieces and a summer move due to the added heat and hectic schedules. With the back to school deadline just around the corner, the last thing you want is to still be unpacking packing and organized as you're trying to send the kids off for that first day of class.

But fear not, we have compiled a list of tips and tricks to help you stay on track and make your summer move as easy and breezy as possible.

Moving over the summer? Plan ahead.

Before you start packing, make a timeline that helps you stay on track, and allows you to be organized throughout your moving process. Note important dates, such as when your lease ends, or when your closing dates are and when your new home will be ready for move-in.

Also, make sure to create a list of important tasks that need to be accomplished before the move. This might include things like

  • canceling utilities at your current home
  • setting up utilities at your new home
  • changing your address
  • setting up internet at your new home
  • registering for school
  • and more

Taking the time to create a plan will ensure that you don't forget tasks and create added stress as moving day gets closer.

Additionally, for many moving services providers, summer is peak moving season, so be sure to plan and book your Go Mini's rental in advance. And, if you have items in storage at one of our locations, be sure to call ahead a few days in advance to schedule delivery services.

Call Ahead for Delivery of Items in Storage

Due to high volume, it's hard to accommodate last minute delivery requests for stored containers. By calling ahead, you can be sure not to run into any issues with availability and can also schedule the delivery of your stored items on the exact day that you need them.

Pre-Schedule Your Pickup

At Go Mini's we're proud to offer flexible rental options, and allow you to schedule your pickup and delivery services at your convenience.

Looking to ensure you can get your delivery setup for an exact date? Be sure too book in advance.

This can help you avoid any additional months in your rental period as you will have a specific date for when your move will be completed. Being able to schedule ahead also allows for a better sense of control during an already overwhelming time.

Organization is Key During a D.I.Y. Move

The biggest tip we can give for a smooth move is to stay organized.

When packing, create an organization method and label everything, we promise you will be glad you did once you start unpacking!

Once your items are delivered to your new home, trying to coordinate and get your new home set up can be overwhelming especially with kids. If your boxes and items are properly labeled from the start they can be easily sorted into the appropriate rooms while you're unloading.

Once your container is emptied, tackle unpacking your home one room at a time. Start with the most essential rooms first like the kitchen and bathrooms.

Pro tip: Don't over do it, especially in the heat of the summer. Take breaks, have snacks and drinks on hand, and delegate tasks if possible to get the job done more efficiently.

Prepping for Back to School After a Move

Heading back to school is exciting, but if your recent relocation has your kids nervous to start a new school year in a new place, try these tips to help ease their minds.

Introduce your children to their new school and neighborhood prior to the start of the year. Take them on a walk around the area to show them some main spots such as the nearby convenience store, library, and of course their future school. This will help them familiarize themselves with the area and get a general sense of what it’s like.

It's also important to ensure your children have all the back to school essentials before the first day. So, make sure they feel unpacked and settled before the big day and set aside a bit of time for that back-to-school shopping trip so they have everything they need to help them make a smooth transition into their new year of learning.

What to Do with Your Moving Boxes and Debris

Once you are settled, you may be left with a pile of boxes and debris. Be sure to recycle and dispose of any items you no longer need. Or, one of our favorite recommendations is to save a few of those boxes for fort building, or even some creative halloween costumes this fall!
