Setting Your “Home Resolutions” in the New Year

As we dive into another new year, many Americans are jotting down goals and resolutions to accomplish in the coming months. The new year is also a great time to reset and refocus on projects and maintenance items that were pushed aside during the hectic holiday season. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite approaches to tackling your large-scale “home” resolutions this year, as well as a few of our favorite home-related goals!

OUR FAVORITE HOME RESOLUTIONS

If you’re not sure where to start in making resolutions for your home, here are some of our favorite goals aimed at helping your home feel more functional throughout the year.

LESS IS MORE

Take time to go through items throughout your house and eliminate those that you are no longer using, have duplicates of, or no longer need. As you’re sorting these items and cleaning out your spaces, consider what can be sold, what can be donated to help others (like donating un-opened items from your pantry to our Move for Hunger Program to support Golden Harvest Food Bank), and what should be disposed of.

GET ORGANIZED

Create systems to organize the various spaces in your home! For areas that collect lots of odds and ends like playrooms, the kitchen or family room, consider using baskets and storage systems to easily sort and organize things.

As you’re developing your storage systems, it’s easiest to “store like with like,” meaning items that are used together or are similar in use or functionality should be sorted and stored together so that you aren’t searching through various boxes, bins and drawers to find what you need.

DEEP CLEAN

Create a cleaning schedule for your house to keep up with regular items like vacuuming, regular bathroom cleaning, changing your sheets and sweeping, but also build in monthly or quarterly “deep cleans” that focus on tasks like getting your your carpets or upholstery steam cleaned, or hiring a cleaning service to come in and give your home a serious cleaning, as opposed to your regular spot-cleaning.

CARE FOR YOUR HOUSE

Prioritize some of the less glamorous projects and take time to care for your home and ensure that it is well maintained. Take time to repaint shutters, wash windows, clean gutters, pressure wash your outside spaces and have your various appliances and systems checked and serviced! Staying on top of these tasks now will keep problems from popping up later!

TWO WAYS TO APPROACH YOUR LARGE-SCALE HOME PROJECTS

If you aren’t sure where to start with your home-related goals this year, these are two of our favorite approaches to help get your to-do list done!

Whether you’re just settling into a new home, preparing to sell, or just need a reset for your space, these approaches are a great way to methodically work through large-scale home projects over the course of the year.

GO ROOM BY ROOM

If you are planing to tackle a whole house project (think cleaning, organizing, renovating, decorating, and more) it can be overwhelming to imagine completing the task throughout your entire room. A great way to divide the task into manageable pieces is to separate the project and tackle it room by room. Pick one room to focus on each week, month, or quarter depending on the scale and timeline of your project.

GO TASK BY TASK

Some goal gurus recommend dividing goals into groups so that you focus on like-items at the same time. That means if you have a long list of house-related goals like “organize the closets, repaint rooms, refinish floors, etc. it might be easier to knock these goals out one task at a time instead of one room at a time, especially if they require hired help or any type of equipment rental.

If you’ve decided to take on a large-scale goal this year, remember Go Mini’s of Augusta is your local provider for convenient, on-site storage. That means as you go room-by-room or task-by-task you will have plenty of extra space at your fingertips to store items as you sort, clean, remodel, or prepare to sell.
