Creating Your Business Name

Creating your business name can be fun, but it is something that should not be taken too lightly. Many business owners make crucial errors in naming their company, thereby turning a potential positive into a negative proposition. Your business name will help draw customers if it has certain attractive aspects.

First make a list of the words that are related to the type of work you do at your firm. Combine some words or parts of words to see what strikes a nerve. Then select the words that you feel are the most appealing and go from there following some basic rules:

1. Avoid “Cutesy” names. People think puns or synonyms are a great tools for naming a business, but it could become confusing when the customer has to look it up or try to type a website address. Hair salons are notorious for this; “Clip Joint’,  “The Hair After’, and ” Zanzibarber”, are just a few.

2. Avoid getting sued. Do not attempt to copy your competitors name by placing a new spin on the name. Major companies tend to frown on this, and are not opposed to sending a cease and desist order.  Example: Dom-Knows-Pizza was only in business a short time before it was sued by its famous sound alike competitor.

3. Avoid localizing the name. Using your town or area name limits you from expansion and growth. When people see a geographic area in a company name they tend to think that you do not venture outside those boundaries. You are much better off using, “The Ultimate Pet Store”, rather than “River City Pet Shop”.

4.Check availability. When you register your name you will probably submit 3 names for government registration so they may run a check on similar names previously on record. You may also want to Google the name, or add a .com to the name to see what comes up.

Finally, run it by your friends and relatives to get some feedback. Ask them to spell it, ask what it tells them about the company, and ask them why they like or dislike the name.
