TV Winners? or Not So Much?

Wheel of Fortune, The Price is Right, and reality shows like Extreme Makeover, and Survivor have large payouts to the big winners. But even if you win you may not be happy when it comes time to pay the taxes and other fees from those winnings. It is an unhappy ending that isn’t that uncommon. All contestants and participants are given the rules in advance. A spokesperson from Extreme Makeover Home Edition says the show offers its families financial counseling to try to help them understand what they’re facing. Few of the families that win the HGTV Dream House can afford to make the payments on their fabulous new home and pay the taxes owed. That’s because the IRS treats your winnings as income.

So if a home is worth $2 million, and you win it, the IRS will simply add the appraised value of the property to your annual income and expect you to pay taxes at the highest rate. At least two Extreme Makeover participants have filed for bankruptcy.

Game show contestants and reality show participants love to win stuff, but all television shows struggle with the question of the inevitable tax bill.  The only way to write a happy ending is to understand how much you’re really winning, how much it will really cost you, and how big a piece Uncle Sam will ultimately take.

You can be a winner when moving with Go Mini’s. Go Mini’s portable storage and its mobile storage containers offer the very best quality portable storage units at an exceptional value for your moving and storage needs. Go to www.gominis.com for a free quote and find the dealer nearest you.

New iPhone 4 Flies Off the Shelves

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Steve Jobs called it the biggest leap since the first iPhone, and it seems to be living up to its hype. Hundreds of thousands of customers lined up Thursday at Apple Stores, hoping to nab the elusive new iPhone 4. By the end of the day, Apple’s latest iPhone was all but sold out across the U.S., including Chicago, San Francisco, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Portland, Ore., Miami and Charlotte.

Best Buys said it was sold out; Radio Shack said it hoped to replenish its stock for the weekend. Wal-Mart said sales were “brisk” and that it is working to get more phones. “They can’t get here soon enough,” said Wal-Mart spokeswoman Melissa O’Brien.

Apple’s exclusive wireless partner, AT&T, won’t sell the phone to walk-in customers until Tuesday. Apple says it sold 600,000 in early orders, and Munster predicts sales of 1 million to 1.5 million phones by Saturday. The new iPhone starts at $199 with a two-year contract or renewal.

Apple spokesman Steve Dowling wouldn’t say how quickly stores would get replenished. “The demand for iPhone 4 is off the charts,” he said. “We are working hard to get them to everyone as quickly as possible.”

Gene Munster, an analyst says it will take about a month for stores to get fully stocked. Munster calls the launch the “biggest” he’s seen for a consumer tech device. What happened? AT&T relaxed its qualifying rules for upgrades, Apple had a hot, cool phone and current iPhone customers salivated for it, says Tim Bajarin, an analyst with Creative Strategies. “It was perfect timing for an upgrade,” he says.

Randy Cruz, 25, got in line at a Los Angeles Apple Store at 10 p.m. Wednesday, determined to pick up her new iPhone before going off to work. Stores opened at 7 a.m. She had damaged her old iPhone two months ago by spilling water on it, and waited for the new model.

“I can work from it, and have fun,” she says. Cruz was lucky in that she got right in; hundreds of others lined up on all sides of the shopping mall all the way to busy Beverly Boulevard. As she exited the store holding the iPhone the waiting customers applauded.

Analyst Munster says Apple should have staggered the pickup time over several days.

Celebrity Homes For Sale

$75 Million mansion selling “as is”.

The 90,000-square-foot home for sale in Windermere, FL,  outside Orlando has 23 bathrooms, 13 bedrooms, 10 kitchens and three pools. The home also has a 20-car garage, a bowling alley, an indoor-roller rink, a movie theater, a video arcade, a fitness center, a baseball field and two tennis courts. All that and more for $75 million “as is.”

The catch? It’s not finished.

Nicknamed “Versailles” by David Siegel, Westgate Resorts timeshare mogul, the mansion hit the market recently as the largest home for sale in the United States. Construction was halted last year to save money in a recession that proved particularly hard on Siegel’s industry.

But the mansion’s interior has no carpet, tile or interior walls. The asking price has been reduced by $25 million.

Creating Your Business Name

Monday, June 21st, 2010

By Dom Annunziata

Creating your business name can be fun, but it is something that should not be taken too lightly. Many business owners make crucial errors in naming their company, thereby turning a potential positive into a negative proposition. Your business name will help draw customers if it has certain attractive aspects.

First make a list of the words that are related to the type of work you do at your firm. Combine some words or parts of words to see what strikes a nerve. Then select the words that you feel are the most appealing and go from there following some basic rules:

1. Avoid “Cutesy” names. People think puns or synonyms are a great tools for naming a business, but it could become confusing when the customer has to look it up or try to type a website address. Hair salons are notorious for this; “Clip Joint’,  “The Hair After’, and ” Zanzibarber”, are just a few.

2. Avoid getting sued. Do not attempt to copy your competitors name by placing a new spin on the name. Major companies tend to frown on this, and are not opposed to sending a cease and desist order.  Example: Dom-Knows-Pizza was only in business a short time before it was sued by its famous sound alike competitor.

3. Avoid localizing the name. Using your town or area name limits you from expansion and growth. When people see a geographic area in a company name they tend to think that you do not venture outside those boundaries. You are much better off using, “The Ultimate Pet Store”, rather than “River City Pet Shop”.

4.Check availability. When you register your name you will probably submit 3 names for government registration so they may run a check on similar names previously on record. You may also want to Google the name, or add a .com to the name to see what comes up.

Finally, run it by your friends and relatives to get some feedback. Ask them to spell it, ask what it tells them about the company, and ask them why they like or dislike the name.

Go Mini’s, Storage On The Go, is an excellent name. It tells you that the company provides mobile storage and portable storage solution. Go to www.gominis.com for a free quote and find the dealership nearest you. Lucrative business opportunities are also available under Become a Dealer.

Celebrity Homes For Sale

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Singer/songwriter Barry Manilow is an American icon known for hits songs such as “I Write the Songs,” “Mandy,” “Copacabana” has his impressive home in Malibu for sale. The four-bedroom home is a blocky contemporary with a matching one-bedroom guest house on the oceanfront. The most impressive part of this home is the two-story living room with big glass windows to exploit the ocean view day or night. Reports are that the home has already had a price cut from $12.6 million to a cool $10.9 million, but Manilow paid $3.85 million in 2002 so there is likely room for further price cuts here and it may need them.

This 3,546 square-foot beauty is located on Malibu Road, right on the beach. The two-story property features a living room with floor-to-ceiling glass, a media/family room, and an entire master wing with its own fireplace and terrace. The home has amazing coastline views, and a separate guest house with a kitchen.

The Value of Branding Smaller Businesses

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

By Dom Annunziata

Branding is a way to leverage success, expand market share, and fend off competition.

Branding is an intangible asset recognized as an asset apart from goodwill if it arises from contractual or other legal rights.

A strong Brand identity can position a company all by itself. But having a strong brand takes time, effort and capital to develop. It is not as easy as redesigning a logo, or changing a commercial ad. Brand identity is the reason your customers choose you instead of your competition.  The brand expansion can be just the thing you need to boost up your sales and your company image. The benefits come from the fact that you’re able to profit from your existing brand name.

Any business professor will tell you that the value of companies has been shifting markedly from tangible assets, “bricks and mortar”, to intangible assets. These invisible assets are the key drivers of value in the knowledge economy.

A study comparing market value to the book value of 3,500 U.S. companies over a period of two decades shows the dramatic upward rise in intangible value. In 1978, market value and book value were pretty much matched: book value was 95% of market value. Twenty years on, book value was just 28% of market value.

For any business, getting your identity right is important, but for a small business it’s absolutely critical.  A larger company with more substantial budgets may have time to spend developing a clear brand and testing out options in the market place.

I’m talking about some of the more familiar manifestations of the brand.  This is all about how you convey, visually what your brand (for a small firm your business) is all about.  Everything from your location and signage to company letterhead, brochures, website and even the type of paper you use for business correspondence can all help reinforce your brand.

That is exactly what you need to do with your company if you intend to expand your brand name. It can be a delicate process, but the benefits are great if you can really establish yourself in a new area.

Go Mini’s has established itself, and its brand identity over the past eight years. Celebrity Homes For Sale

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

Last month Joan Rivers put her Connecticut country house in New Milford, Connecticut on the market for $6.5 Million.

The four-bedroom country home is a bit more relaxed than her Manhattan apartment which is also on the market for $25 million. She bought the property for $1,438,400 in 2000. After taking ownership, she had the home pulled down to the foundation and then created the current home salvaging only the stone fireplace in the living room and a few stone columns from the original home.

The master bedroom is a pink fantasy complete with a canopy bed facing what appears to be an illustration of Joan and Melissa Rivers hanging over the fireplace. The over-75-acre property includes a swimming pool and pool house, detached barn/garage and a private pond.
